More Lotion in The Basket

So Vista called me last week. I know, I know.

So Vista called me last week. I know, I know… but it sounded so… I dunno… like it needed me back. So we talked a bit and it was actually pretty nice. I think it’s changed some. I think it really does miss me and knows how badly I was treated the first time round; mostly I think it’s just come to realize what it lost when we broke up.

At first I wasn’t going to call back but then that troublemaker Jon Galloway told me that I might want to get clear on my feelings. Bad breakups can really set you back emotionally and scar you from taking on other commitments. So I took Jon’s advice and decided to give Vista One More Chance.

Doing it Vista’s Way
This time, rather than try to change Vista (being the controlling, co-dependent type that I can be) I decided to embrace it, and see it’s good parts. You know, see the love in every OS. And I think I can see it now. Yah, it throws tirades and all when I think about other OS’s… but it’s only cause it really does love me.

So I decided that, rather than rename and relocate all my folders (Documents, Links, Pictures, etc), i’d let Vista just keep things where it wants to. It used to get soooo mad when trying to find my Documents folder! And my friend Norton Ghost doesn’t come around any more. I had to tell him that Vista was just more important to me. And so I am using Vista’s Backup system which now snaps images as well as file backups.

Taking it Slow
We sort of rushed into things the first time – partying with all the applications that would come our way and spending every waking work-minute together. “Known to cause issues”? Who cares! Let’s Party! This time I’ve been sure that every application I install is tested first, and if it doesn’t work with Vista, I make sure to use protection by snapping a Restore Point.

We Still Have Some Bumpy Times
We still fight. But maybe fighting is healthy. Vista doesn’t like the video drivers that NVidia suggested I give it. Not only did it not like it, Vista won’t even talk to me when I bring em up. It goes all scrambly on me and I have to restart. Not sure what NVidia knows about “WHQL” but try and run WoW on any video card with the GeForce chipset.

I’ve had to say goodbye to other friends aside from Ghost, but Vista likes me better cause I’m doing that. I can’t use Adobe’s Acrobat for instance, and my favorite Outlook Addin (Getting Things Done) won’t work yet either. That’s OK, I spend all my time here with Vista anyway. Who has time for free time.

Bottom line is that I really really like this OS. The ClearType is easy on my eyes and the sound settings are finally something that doesn’t sit on my eardrums like a lost razorblade. All my core applications work a treat (Studio, now with it’s latest updates, SQL Server SP1, etc). For those times I need to use the old OS, Virtual PC works just fine for me. And there’s something about the sound system in Vista that is really, really nice. I’m hearing things from my Sound Card that I’ve never heard before – like Bowie’s inhale in “Sorrow”.

I think Vista’s happy too. I’ve only gotten the hose once (aside from NOT putting the lotion in the basket) and it was because I tried to reset my default sound device in the middle of a Skype conversation while putting the smack down on a lvl 38 Paladin in Arathi Basin.
