Arm-Chair Coding
Nothing’s worse than watching someone you respect – either in the community or at your job – change their focus and get away from the code. They’ll probably be the first ones to tell you that “I wish I could get back in there… I just don’t have the time”. Whether it’s being promoted to management or just writing articles and speaking most of the time – skills erode unless you do something about it.

And I want to do just that. I get to sling code around a lot working at Tekpub – but in the back of my mind is the constant worry of “is this real enough – does this make sense in a pragmatic, day-to-day-in-the-trenches way?” Sure, things can make sense theoretically but it’s the people who are doing to the work that usually pop with the best inventions (Rails came from Basecamp, SubSonic came from an Open Source app as well as some work I was doing on contract, etc). I like that place – it’s fun to be inspired to help out real-world concerns.
What Am I Asking Then?
I’d love to work with you or your team filling in/helping out/strategizing/whatever. I almost don’t really care what the task is. I’d love to do some Rails work because it’s been a while and that framework taught me a lot. I’ve also come to really REALLY enjoy the changes over the last few years. Building this blog on Rails has fired me up – so I’d love to do more.
Of course working with ASP.NET MVC would be great as well – not going to be picky
– I enjoy both frameworks and my goal this year is become equally proficient in each.
And for those of you wondering if this will impact Tekpub at all – YES! It’s why I’m doing it
. I’ll still be burning out the videos but ideally they will become increasingly applicable to day-to-day stuff as I keep my feet on the ground.
If you want to contact me my email is myname at gmail. Cheers!
