This post is a bit of a downer – at least for me – but it comes on the heals of this Tweet by Scott:

jobs

One of those positions is mine. I’ve made the tough decision to leave Microsoft and go back to working for myself. My last day is August 28th.

Truthfully there is no drama here – short of the fact that I’m more than a bit sad that I won’t get to work with/for my friend/hero. It’s an unfortunate case of bad timing – I had made the decision literally at the same time Scott got the bump. But I spose in the end it will save him from the headache of having to deal with me :). This is a dream job – it’s local *or* remote, working with some very talented people. If you’re interested click the link above!

It's been an honor to work at Microsoft. The folks there are brilliant and humbling, and the way they treat their employees is first class all the way. I wish all of them the best of luck and good wishes.

One thing I’d like to make very clear: I’m not going to stop what I’m doing. If anything – I’m going to do a lot more of it with, shall we say, a little more of “me” behind it :). SubSonic is still mine and I’m going to keep on like I always have – I’m just switching employers from Microsoft to … well me.

I’m sure some of you might be curious as to why I’ve made this decision, and let’s just say it comes down to knowing when to say when – and it’s time.

When.

Rob: These balls are mine, and they are made of brass.

Wow, you're walking away from most of our dream jobs. But you-da-man so you must know what you're doing (and leaving). Good luck!

I liked how you gave me the feeling MS is moving towards a different cause. I hope this course is one they won't abandon any time soon.
As many others, I followed your MVC screencasts and learned a lot from them.

And now I'm curious what will come up on this blog. Maybe in your own time you still will use the MVC framework and tell us all about it?

You've certainly done a lot for the Microsoft development community and we're certainly glad to have you back as one of us now.

I look forward to seeing your next big thing!

Mike - Wednesday, August 12, 2009 - Best wishes to you, Rob. I spent 5 years at MS in a job that really did not fit with my career aspirations. It’s hard to leave a company with such name recognition, such great people. But you have to follow your heart and passion. We’re all looking forward to that next step. :-)

Rusty - Monday, August 17, 2009 - Wow, that's some very interesting and unexpected news. The Mvc team has been my very favorite thing to follow in Microsoft and you are a big part of that. Of course, SubSonic still bring me bigger grins than Linq or Entity so I can't say this makes _me_ sad. I'm glad to see you continuing your commitment to us even if its not with the blessing and funding of the mothership.
Best of luck and I'll continue to watch you like a crazy-eyed stalker.

idaband - Tuesday, August 18, 2009 - Best wishes. I'm glad you were able to make the decision on your own. Many of us in Michigan are forced to switch positions, but when your as talented as you are you can go anywhere and be successful everywhere. I'm sure we will see you very active still.
